Shopping Security
SOME SUGGESTIONS FOR RETAINING WHAT IS YOURS:
- Only carry the credit cards you actually need, keep an inventory of all of your cards, at home, including the 800 number of the issuing firm, in case any are lost.
- Plan your purchases in advance, carry only the amount of cash necessary to make the purchase. If you must carry a large sum of money, divide the cash among several pockets, purse, wallet, etc.
- Don't count money as you walk away from an ATM — do it before you leave the machine — don't carry or flash a big roll of cash — you make yourself a target.
- When using a credit card, be certain that you get YOURS back, as well as any and all carbon copies of the receipt, which should be torn up — AT HOME.
- Carry your wallet and/or purse in an inside pocket if at all possible.
- Be extremely careful if you are asked to give a credit card number over the phone. If you did not initiate the call, don't give out your number.
- NEVER give your PIN to ANYONE
- If you carry a shoulder bag, carry it in front of you.
- Don't leave wallets, purses, in clothing hanging in an office or coat closet. Lock them in a desk or filing cabinet, contact your security dept. for keys if you don't have any.
- When driving, keep your doors locked, windows closed. Be certain the gas tank is full, maintain your car in good condition to minimize the possibility of a breakdown. Always park in well-lit areas, lock vehicle doors, have your keys ready in your hand as you return to your vehicle.
- If you place purchases in your car, put them in your trunk, or drape a blanket over them — having a blanket in a vehicle is recommended in case of a breakdown in cold weather — never leave gifts in plain view.
- Be alert and aware of your surroundings at all times. Criminals often confront people who appear distracted.
- If possible, travel on well populated, well-lit streets, again, if possible with a friend.
- Consider acquiring a cell phone, if for no other reason than safety. With the current volume of available phones, one may be owned inexpensively, and the first time it gets you out of a difficult situation, it will have paid for itself.
